Bragbury v Ware (Old Hertfordians) Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 30 Jul 2005 at 13.30 meet at 12.00
Match was Abandoned
A shocked Captain won his second toss in two weeks and eventually stuck the oppo in. A brave choice given that we were playing the top of the Division, had only nine players (eight and half once Chris K tried to run about and did his hamstring) and we only had two players who'd bowled more than 10 overs this season.
Ware however bowled and fielded really well. Risso rolled back the years and bowled 21 overs at less than 2 an over. Meanwhile the oppo weren't to be tempted by the wide open spaces and the Steak and Kidney served up by The Colonel. Si Knott finally showed some consistancy in line and length and was well rewarded with 3 wickets. Danny and Alan came on at the end and each bowled tightly forcing the oppo into some lose strokes. Most encouragingly 5 catches were held with only one difficult chance put down at gully.
The Ware innings started as normal with a couple of early wickets falling. Risso joined the Colonel and annoyed the oppo by leaving everything that wasn't on the stumps, no matter how close the ball was. The light started to fail and rain began to fall. We made it clear to the oppo that we were happy to carry on until it became ridiculous and then (soaked) we went off.
Then the fun began.
A good half an hour of rain had fallen some of it heavy. There was standing water on the wicket. The oppo desperate for a result were out mopping the wicket up with bar towels and talked of giving it some time to dry out. A bag of sawdust was produced. The purchasing of covers was talked of. Eventually the captains went out to inspect the wicket and even though it was patently a mud bath the oppo said that they wanted to play on, wisely the cap refused.
