Ware (OH) Cricket Club - 1st XI Match Report – 19-Aug-2006

Ware lost the toss in their match against Holtwhites Tribinibis and were put in to bat first on a damp pitch on a day where a full day's play seemed unlikely.

In difficult batting conditions and in the face of some accurate and disciplined bowling, Ware made a steady start with Tom Thoday and Wayne Langton batting patiently and picking off the bad balls. When Thoday fell looking to accelerate the scoring, Langton was joined by William Jones and the pair set about amassing a competitive total. Langton fell for a well compiled 52. John Sclhaepfer continued his good run of scores with an important 32. Jones returned to form with the bat scoring 54 and Matt Gillewicz added 27 quick runs at the end to enable Ware declared on 213 off 51 overs.

This always looked like it would be an imposing target on what were awkward batting conditions, however no-one could have predicted what was to follow. A wicket in the first over was followed by another one in the second over, and yet another in the third over. As the wickets continued to tumble is became clear that those watching were witnessing something special. And so it was that after a 14.3 overs of near flawless bowling and catching, Holtwhites Tribinibis had been dismissed for just 19 runs – with 13 of these coming from the number 4 batsman Singh, and 4 more coming in extras.

The damage was done by Troy Forrest who bowled 7.3 overs and took 7 wickets for 6 runs, and Darren Patel who took 2 for 12 from the other end.

A fantastic day for Ware was complete when it became clear that the two teams ahead of them in the division had both failed to win. This allowed Ware to move into second place, and within striking distance of Berkhamstead. And with Ware due to play Berkhamstead in the penultimate game of the season, finishing top is now in sight.
