Old Camdenians v Ware (Old Hertfordians) Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 28 Jul 2007 at 1330
Ware (Old Hertfordians) Cricket Club Lost by 30 runs
Ware visited mid-table Old Camdenians, looking for a win that would propel them back into the top four places. Starting without captain John Schlaepfer, who was badly delayed in traffic, Ware won the toss and elected to bowl first on an uneven looking pitch.
Concerns about the pitch were short lived however, as there turned out to be little in it for the seam bowlers, with William Jones and James Dickinson bowling well initially without any reward. Jones finally made the breakthrough in his seventh over, having Littlewoods caught at gully, and turned it into a double as he trapped Eric LBW second ball. Ware sniffed a collapse, but Chin and Correl consolidated well for Old Camdenians to see off Jones, Dickinson and Richard Bartsch and looked to set the platform for a large score. Dickinson returned to dismiss Chin, and Darren Patel claimed the scalp of Gaurav soon after. But at the other end Correl was cutting loose and began to score heavily from Dickinson – taking advantage of a short boundary behind the bowler to loft the ball for several sixes. Jones returned for a second spell as Bartsch struggled with a knee injury, and Correl finally fell for an impressive 56 – just when it looked like Old Camdenians may post a score in excess of 220. Patel and Jones bowled tightly for the remainder of the innings and strangled out the remaining batsmen, as the batting team posted a score of 190. Patel bowled very well with not a lot of luck to finish up with 2 for 32, and Jones ended with 6 for 38 after a marathon 21.2 over effort.
In reply, the Ware opening pair of Dickinson and Wayne Langton lost no time asserting their authority on the Old Camdenians bowling. Dickinson was particularly harsh on anything full and cleared the field to find the boundary regularly. Langton continued his recent good form as he drove and pulled confidently to play his part in a partnership that put Ware firmly in control of the match. After looking untroubled throughout, both players suddenly perished in the space of three balls – Dickinson bowled for 39 and Langton bowled of his pads for 27. When Jones was caught behind for 7 shortly afterwards, the game was back in the balance. Bartsch joined Schlaepfer and, after some early scares, the pair gained the upper hand. Bartsch batted solidly, while Schlaepfer was at his stylish best – driving and cutting with aplomb, and the pair took Ware within sight of victory. But with 53 runs still needed, Schlaepfer's innings was cut short on 44 by a harsh looking LBW decision – hit on the front foot while sweeping – and the pressure moved back onto Ware. With the light fading, the Ware lower order failed to come to terms with the pace of Bedford and once Bartsch had fallen for 24, there was little further resistance. Ware collapsed to be all out for 160 and lose a game that they had dominated for much of their innings.
This disappointing result saw Ware drop off the pace in the race for promotion, and it will need a good run for the rest of the season to bring them back into contention.
