Ware (Old Hertfordians) Cricket Club Lost

After nearly an hours drive to Northwood we were greeted by a pleasant ground with fantastic sunshine!

The Oppo’s Skipper (a work colleague of Tom Thoday) decided it was going to be a timed game. Ware Won the Toss and put them into bat.

Risso opened the bowling down the slope with Matt Berry Making his Sunday Debut from the other end. Both bowled extremely well Risso finishing a 11 over spell for 19 runs and 5 of those were in the last over! Matt bowled extremely well bowling very tightly to a Div 3 Batsmen who had the upmost respect for his new found talent. Riz and Matt were unlucky not to make a breakthrough.

The change brought Guten (Morgan) and Little Jon into the attack, the batsmen found them a little easier to deal with and picked up the pace adding 50 runs between them of the bowling. The breakthrough finally came through a bizarre twist of fate. Their number two batsmen had taken the opportunity to practice his forward defensive and once the ball had run off from the bat he stayed in position admiring his last stride. Little be known to him the skipper had collected the ball walked up to the wicket behind him. Noticing his perfect stride, glanced at the square leg umpire then calmly removed the bails. Appealing on his own and to the amazement of his team mates the umpire gave him out. In the midst of admiring his defensive stride his heel had left the crease and given away his wicket after an opening partnership of 124 runs.

Tom “The All rounder Thoday” stepped up with ball in hand and started to throw down what can only be described as inspiring bowling! Darren Patel watched in amazement as he tightened the screw on their captain. After starting off expensive he finally got his man with a cracking catch or two catches from Freddy “The Hit man” Hart. Diving forward in vein he had it then lost it but regained it one handed before hitting the deck!

Darren Patel wandered up and requested to bowl, obviously not wanting to be out “span” by Tom. His usual deceptive spin bowling confused the oppo’s batsmen keeping runs to a minimum. He was rewarded with two wickets in one over both coming from looping catches which fell into, Yes! none other than Tom Thoday’s hands! You could not keep him out the Game!

A Top effort by all! Especially Rob for his fielding, the ball seemed to follow him everywhere. Dave and Steve for fantastic fielding.

The Ware OH innings started well. Both Risso and The Hit man played some effortless shots which amassed a few runs. Risso went head to head with their opening bowler in a effort to avoid the trap that had been set. With not a single fielder on the leg side Riz was determined not be outwitted and tried to find the gaps between the 4 slips and two gully’s. It was not to be and sat one up to second slip. Freddy soon followed to a caught and bowled. Dave B was not even given the opportunity to settle and was bowled for a duck with a cracking in swinger removing off stump. Steve Followed suit and went for 0. Experience prevailed and Morgan / Patel partnership upped the run rate. Guten was next to go picking out the only fielder on the leg side with a decent catch!

The Skipper was now at the crease and determined not to let the game slip. Darren was finding his feet on 3 runs while the skipper was left to deal with 3 over’s worth of full tosses which cost the bowler 35 runs.
After a quick scoring period Darren fell to a cracking caught and bowled for 27. Gilewicz the traitor was bought into the oppo’s bowling attack. Asked to put the ball on the spot by their skipper resulted in Tom Ellaway hitting him out the ground!

With 20 over’s left in the game and 120 runs needed, the pace needed to be upped in order to get anywhere near the 203 total. The Skipper fell to the straight one going after their opening bowler on 46. Tom Thoday hung in there for a hard fought 4 runs. Matt berry smashed Gilewicz for 4 runs; Rob Glover battled on and although ended up with no runs frustrated the bowlers by not giving up his wicket. Jon Little attempted to play all around the ball and succeeded!

The end result was a loss but it was a cracking game against a much more experienced opposition. I’d like to thank my team in what I thought was one of the best games of cricket this year!
