Ware (Old Hertfordians) Cricket Club Lost
All did not start well. Following the detectives to the ground we naturally got a bit lost. Having spotted a guy carrying a cricket bag, we asked for directions to Northwood Ground. In his best Aussie accent he replied "ap vere maat". It wasn't looking good. Our chairman had kindly written to the oppo explaining the lack of real bowling, batting....well players for that matter and we had already discovered their pro. We might have done better if we had run him over there and then.
The weather was baking, we had only just arrived and checked in, spent 20 minutes driving to the ground and most just wanted beer. I could end the report there but I'll suffer on..
Gilewicz opened the bowling, given by his action and run up I'm sure thats what he was doing. The aussie was surely out when he caught a high bat off an express pace delivery from Gilewicz (if I write it, I can say what I like) The aussie would surely be caught..no luck today, dropped. - the aussie rode his luck and continued on, hitting the middle of the bat sweetly to make 70 odd.
Steve Risby, Dave Bly and Justin Gray all bowled very well and each took a wicket or 2. Jamie Don stepped up to the plate and delivered. Jamie bowled very well 6 overs for 12 runs including 2 maidens for 1 wicket, Jamie actually had 2 catches dropped off his bowling. (This time it wasn't me dropping them).
Matt Blore and Allan Tyrer chipped in their bowling to ensure the home side had a far crack at it given our 'No wagging Tail' batting line up.
Time for us to bat, the aussie was now wearing a pair of wicket keeping gloves but no pads. When our long standing highly respected wicket keeper himslef, Andy Vaughan, asked why - "dats wot de glurves r fer maat". Within 2 or 3 overs he had dropped 2 catches and been hit in the head by one that popped up - "Thats what the gloves are for you twat" bellowed Mr Vaughan from the pavilion.
Can't remember much more about the game other then Dave Bly got a seemingly easy 20 and Gilewicz was given all but a spoon to help himslef with from the oppo in making his 62.
Very much enjoyed the weather and company which was massively more impressive then our cricket - but who cares on tour. In truth, Northwood were a great bunch and with a lovely little ground - many thanks for playing us Northwood.
