Ware (Old Hertfordians) Cricket Club 1st XI v Radlett IV on Sat 07 Aug 2004 at 1.30pm meet at 12.45pm
Match was Drawn
On a very hot day with what looked like an interesting wicket the skip decided to bat (ater winning the toss). the oppo kept their bowling very tight and the 1st wicket of Bly looked as though the ball kept low and moved a bit. Gray came in and muddled to 26 (dropped 3 times) before being bowled by Meepagama who bowled a good line and length all game. The skipper (Schlaepfer) then came out to back an already great innings by Pete Devonshire, who after reaching 83 decided that everything was going to a fielder so he may as well slog and was promptly bowled by Meefagama. Out walked Troy Forrest with one thing on his mind, after smashing his first shot for 6 we all knew what that was and he proceeded to smash 78, not out, off of 48 balls. The Skipper (47 NO) declared after 51 overs after setting what looked like a winning score of 261 for 3.
We started off the 2nd innings with a very attacking field to try and get early wickets, unfortunately the ball didn't seem to go to hand or stick and the oppo got off to a great start. Sticky (Bly) made the break through with a rising ball that the batsman nicked in to Paddy Butchers gloves with some excellent glove work. Radlett seemed to then dig in and their opener Johnson(84 NO) and No.3 Randall (55) put on an excellent partnership playing some great shots, punishing the bad balls and keeping us quiet in the field. Dev managed to almost shut up one end and Batchy, Troy and Stick tried their best to take wickets. Then a piece of inspired Captaincy brought us the highlight of the day and almost the win, up steps Sean McChleary who claims he hasn't bowled since leaving school with what can only be described as a fantastic spell. Sean had the batsman in trouble from the start with his brisk in swinging bowling, His 1st wicket was to take their No3 Randall, caught by J Schlaepfer, then his next over another wicket Caught by Gray, he kept his bowling tight for a few overs before the catch of the day from Alan Tyrer diving one handed on the boundary to give Sean his 3 wicket. His last 3 wickets came one after the other in an amazing hattrick to give Sean figures of 12 overs 6 wickets for 58...The oppo then shut up shop and bar a few slim chances held on for the draw on what turned out to be a fairly good batting wicket.
